Day for People with disAbilities (May 5th)
The Virginia Zoo is proud to be a part of the 10th anniversary celebration, which showcases resources and opportunities available to the disAbled community. Last year over 40 service providers and organizations were on hand educating over 3,000 people about opportunities available to people with different abilities. Hosted by Norfolk's Therapeutic Recreation Center, this event features activities for children, games for adults, live entertainment, and some surprises for 2012.
Horticulture Plant Sale (May 12th)
Just in time for Mother’s Day, join us for a demonstration about container gardening and then tour the gardens at your leisure. We will have assorted annuals and perennials for sale and our horticulture staff will be on hand to answer questions.
Plant Conservation Day featuring Sky Art (May 19th)
A global celebration to preserve and protect plants for people, animals, and the planet. Sky Art raises funds to support local and international conservation projects by creating an image on the ground using- you!
Arbor Day (October)
Norfolk has been designated as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation to emphasize the importance of trees to a community. In celebration of Arbor Day we will be giving away free tree saplings.
G.R.O.W. (Gardening Restores Our Way-of-life) offers year-round vegetable, herb and flower gardening experiences to individuals with disabilities. This program is operated in partnership with Norfolk's Therapeutic Recreation Center.
Tanner’s Creek Garden Center
The Center allows individuals with disabilities to learn basic horticulture skills in a supportive environment in their own greenhouse facility on Zoo grounds. This program is operated in partnership with Eggleston Services.
