6th - 8th Grade Discovery Programs

If you do not see a program here that fits your instructional goals, we will create a custom program for you. We can include specified SOLs or other topics to create a program just for your class.  Recent special topics have included genetics, careers in zoology, ecosystems and communities, animals in literature, and the Zoo as a service business. Please contact the Education Department for more information at (757) 441-2374, ext. 227.

Some programs are available to go to your school. These presentations must take place in a space that does not have any air-breathing animals. We are able to offer multiple presentations of only one program on each outreach.

Who Shares the Watershed?
SOL 6.1, 6.7, 6.9

(Also available in version for older grades – SOLs LS. 9, LS.10)

(Please note that holding the program at the Zoo allows for actual observation of wildlife in tidal wetlands included within and bordering the Zoo grounds)

Invite native animals to your classroom to help establish the connection to local wetlands and the watershed. Students will perform approximate and precise measurements like those used in monitoring tidal waters, and perhaps arrive at some new ideas for science projects.
Presented on-site at the Zoo or at your school as a Zoo-to-You program

Am I in the Right Class?

SOL LS.5, LS 10

Why and how do scientists classify living things?  Students will explore this question as they meet an animal from each class (insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals).  Key characteristics that place each example in each class will be highlighted, and specific adaptations that allow each animal to survive in its natural habitat will be covered as well.
Presented on-site at the Zoo or at your school as a Zoo-to-You program
