2010 Summer Camp Safari at the Virginia Zoo
The wonderful, weird and wild all can be found at Summer Safari Camp at the Virginia Zoo. From animal encounters to crafts, games and exciting discoveries, Virginia Zoo camp is for kids who love wild things and want to explore the world.
The weekly, five-day sessions begin June 21 and continue through the week of August 16. Little campers who are 4 and 5 years old will enjoy half day sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Older adventurers from 6 to 14 years old will enjoy a full day of fun and learning from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
From lions to zebras, we have it all. Campers can learn more about the natural world in their own backyards, be inspired to save the world through conservation, or learn more about the exotic world of animal science.
Cost For Each Weekly Session:
- Half day camps -- $140 Zoo members/$165 non-members
- Full day camps -- $240 Zoo members/ $290 non-members
- Extended Care -- $25/day (available for full day camps only)

Ages 4-5 (Half Day Camps)
August 9-13
- A, B and On To Z: From Antelopes to Zebras, the Zoo ABCs: From antelopes and baboons on to zebras, the ABCs are great fun at the Zoo. Review the alphabet and learn exciting facts about the animals too.
August 16-20
- Backyard and Beyond: Where Animals Live: Discover the reasons why animals are where they are in the world starting with your own backyard.
Ages 6-7
August 2-6
- Their Future Is In Your Hands: Extinction to Excess: Investigate how what humans do affects the animals around us, and remember what actions you can take to help our animal friends.
August 16-20
- Disgusting or Fascinating? EEK! & Ewww! Animals: Explore nature’s fascinating aspects of things that are disgusting. Or are they? Why are insects good food? Why do elephants eat their own dung without getting sick? Discover these natural wonders and more.
Ages 8-9
August 9-13
- Web of Life: It’s All Connected: Come learn how plants, animals and the environment are all intertwined and affect each other.
Ages 10-11
August 2-6
- Who Goes There? Tracking Animals in Your Own Backyard: Garden vegetables suddenly disappear? Strange markings or footprints in your yard? Come learn the different ways to track and identify animals and become an expert tracker.
Ages 12-14
August 9-13
- There’s No Business Like Zoo Business: Many people want to work in a zoo, but what does it take to work, design and operate a zoo? Find out the inner workings of the zoo business and how the many aspects of zoo operations function. The zoo world awaits you.
