Shade Garden

Hardy orchids flaunt themselves among...
Shady group with purple flowers in the center of the frame

A delightful retreat can be found in the Virginia Zoo's Shade Garden.

Towering tulip poplar, weeping birch, deodar cedar, and southern magnolia cool the air and filter the sunlight to create a refreshing habitat for plants, people, and animals. Small trees such as katsura, stewartia, and redbud lower the canopy to meet shade-loving shrubs and perennials.

In the shade, foliage color and texture take precedence over flowers, and plant selection changes with the amount of available sunlight.
