on Safari Without Leaving Home!
180 degree radius zoo web cam close look at animals
NORFOLK , VA – What is Rufus the Rhino up to right now? You can find out by logging on the Virginia Zoo website and checking out the 180 degree “Lion Exhibit Cam.” Without leaving your home, you can take a safari to Africa and check out the Zoo's outside exhibits that are home to the lions and their neighbors, the rhinos, zebra and elephants. It's a great opportunity to check out these amazing animals even when you are not at the zoo. After all, cubs – like kids – grow up fast.
The Zoo cam is accessible from a link on the Zoo's homepage at www.virginiazoo.org. “Our lion cubs, Granby and Neka, are thoroughly enjoying their outdoor exhibit,” says Greg Bockheim, executive director of the Virginia Zoo. “Each morning they are eager to get outside with their parents, where they spend their days roughhousing with each other, pestering their parents, Zola and Mramba, and napping in the sun. Web visitors also can zoom on our rhinos, Rufus and Alfred, our zebra, April, and elephants, Monica, Lisa and Cita.”
Now that the cubs are officially on public exhibit and no longer sending their days in the lion's den, the “Cub Cam” installed in September has been moved. “Thanks to the generosity of the City of Norfolk and its IT staff, we were able to give people a unique look at the cubs and their savannah sharing neighbors,” explains Bockheim. “The outdoor web cam views the real animal action from the lion pride interactions to the rhinos feeding to the elephants enjoying their pond and enrichment toys.”
Visitors to the Zoo's website can click on the “Lion Exhibit Cam” link, and then control the camera through a drop-down menu that lets them select a specific animal habitat. Once the camera focuses on the exhibit, web users can zoom in and scan across several exhibit habitats.
As an accredited Association of Zoos and Aquariums ( AZA ) facility, the Virginia Zoo exhibits over 350 animals, beautifully manicured grounds and offers a fun-filled day for all. For more than a century, the Virginia Zoo has demonstrated a commitment to wildlife, conservation and education. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and located at 3500 Granby Street in Norfolk . Daily admission prices are $7.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors (age 62 and over), and $5.00 for children ages 2-11. Visit www.virginiazoo.org or call (757) 441-2374 for more information.
