The Virginia Zoo Holds Creative Writing Contest
in Honor of Black History Month

Students are invited to submit essays about inspiration African Americans


NORFOLK , VA – In honor of Black History Month in February, the Virginia Zoo is holding an creative writing contest on the topic “What African American, past or present, has inspired you the most?” Deadline for entries is Friday, February 8, and the winners will receive a $50.00 savings bond.

Coordinated by the Zoo's Education Department, this contest is open to local students in kindergarten through 12 th grade. Entrants are encouraged to be creative and may submit up to 300 words in essay, poem or song format. Three winners will be selected, one each from the following categories: Grades K-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. A celebratory luncheon will be held at the Zoo on Saturday, February 23, 2008 to honor winners. As an accredited Association of Zoos and Aquariums ( AZA ) facility, the Virginia Zoo exhibits over 350 animals, beautifully manicured grounds and offers a fun-filled day for all.
