Education
Do you want to share a message of wildlife conservation? Become a Docent! Docents are trained to educate people about the environment, wildlife conservation, animal endangerment and the Zoo's mission. Docents share their knowledge through tours, community outreach, animal stations and live animal presentations. Docents have the opportunity to work hands-on with animals during presentations. Emphasis is on public speaking skills with children and adults. Ages requirements: 18 and up.

Animal Services
What do Zookeepers do? Find out, be a Keeper Aide. Keeper Aides assist Zookeepers in the day-to-day care of animals by helping to prepare diets, feed animals and clean exhibits. Since most of the Zoo's animals are wild, there is limited "hands-on" contact. Keeper Aides gain valuable educational experience through observing animals and hard work. Minimum age is 15 years.
Service days are available Sunday through Saturday, and times are 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  Volunteers must attend an orientation session prior to beginning work. Please note:  All Keeper Aide positions are filled at this time.

Special Events

The Virginia Zoo is proud to be a part of the Hampton Roads community and to show our appreciation for your support, we host several special events filled with family fun and activities year round.  Individuals as well as community groups, organizations and clubs are needed to collate materials, staff registration tables, greet guests and assist with event set-up and break-down.  Training is offered year round.  Minimum age required is 15 years old.

Animal Services Internship

A limited number of internships are offered to students receiving high school or college credit while experiencing the day to day operation of a zoological collection.  Interns will assist keepers with cleaning, feeding, behavioral enrichment and observational duties.  Internships will be designed in accordance with objectives required by the education institution if possible.  Please note:  All Animal Services 2008 Summer Internship positions are filled!

Clerical
The Virginia Zoological Society is a busy office setting. Volunteers are needed in various departments to assist with mailings and general clerical duties. Training is offered year round. Minimum age required is 18 years.
