Volunteer at the Virginia Zoo!
The Virginia Zoo wants YOU!
Volunteering at the Virginia Zoo is rewarding and fun!
The first step in volunteering is to click here to download an application, fill it out and submit it. Docent, Horticulture and BEARS volunteers must attend a training session before working. Sessions are held several times a year. These volunteers also will be asked to complete a background check.
The next orientation for new volunteers will be Saturday, August 24 at 10:00 a.m.
Docent Volunteer Program
Help share the Zoo’s important education messages about conservation and the animals with which we share our world. Minimum age is 18 years old.
Horticulture Volunteer Program
Use your green thumb to help out in our gardens. We need volunteers who know about gardening to help staff with plant care, landscaping and more to keep the Zoo beautiful and exhibits spectacular.
B.E.A.R.S. – Behavior, Enrichment and Animal Resource Squad
Assist with animal husbandry of the Zoo's program animals, participate in behavioral observations, enrichment construction and other special projects. Minimum age required is 18 years old.
Special Event Volunteer Program
The Virginia Zoo hosts several special events filled with family fun and activities. Individuals as well as community groups, organizations and clubs, are needed for a variety of roles, including set up, assisting guests, helping with logistics and more. Special Events volunteers will be contacted as they are needed for special projects and events.
Junior Docent Volunteer Program
For volunteers ages 13 to 17, the Junior Docent Volunteer Program offers opportunities to learn about animals and share your knowledge. To apply for a junior docent position, click here to download the application and come to the next orientation (see date and time above). Note that a parent or guardian must attend orientation with a prospective junior docent.
