Volunteer at the Virginia Zoo

Education Docent | Horticulture | Keeper Aide | Special Events | Junior Docents

Volunteering at the Virginia Zoo is rewarding! Volunteer programs are listed below, and for more information, e-mail meg.puckett@norfolk.gov.

The first step in volunteering is to submit an application. Docent, Horticulture and Keeper Aide volunteers must attend a training session before working. Sessions are held several times a year. These volunteers also will be asked to complete a background check.

Special Events volunteers will be contacted as they are needed for special projects and events.

To request an application, please email meg.puckett@norfolk.gov.

Docent Volunteer Program

Help share the Zoo’s important education messages about conservation and the animals with which we share our world.  Minimum age is 18 years old. There will be an orientation for new docents Saturday, Feb. 4. For more information please email meg.puckett@norfolk.gov.

Horticulture Volunteer Program

Use your green thumb to help out in our gardens.  We need volunteers who know about gardening to help staff with plant care, landscaping and more to keep the Zoo beautiful and exhibits spectacular.

Keeper Aide Volunteer Program

The Keeper Aide program is currently full. Help zookeepers care for animals by preparing diets, feeding animals and cleaning exhibits. It’s hard work and valuable educational experience. Minimum age required is 18 years old.

Special Event Volunteer Program
The Virginia Zoo hosts several special events filled with family fun and activities.  Individuals as well as community groups, organizations and clubs, are needed for a variety of roles, including set up, assisting guests, helping with logistics and more.

Junior Docent Volunteer Program

The Junior Docent program is currently full. For volunteers ages 13 to 17, the Junior Docent Volunteer Program offers opportunities to learn about animals and share your knowledge.

If you don't have access to e-mail, please call our volunteer coordinator at (757) 441-2374, ext. 225.
